Graphic design can be tricky when it comes to creating original content. There is always the uncertainty of which plan to go for and how you should go about it. So, how do you know if an idea is a good or bad one? Well, here at J.O., we believe every idea is a good idea.
You never know what success a single thought can lead to. A bad idea may lead to a good idea. A good idea may lead to an even better idea. A thought is just the beginning of a project; the possibilities are endless. When I first began studying graphic design, I tended to jump around from one design to another, pitching a new one in every class. It wasn’t until my professor finally advised me to settle on the one that I thought was best, work on it, and let it unfold. Nothing happens all at once, it develops over time. Only when you focus, you can improve on a solution elevating it past your initial concept. With the help of mindful messaging and persistence, your idea, that you might’ve once considered bad, has the potential to become better than you could’ve imagined. All it takes is time, dedication, and resilience.
Different ideas also allow you to take risks. Not only does this make you stand out but will also help you learn and become more confident. Breaking out of your comfort zone is important in order to learn your style and challenge the field. Some of my favorite moments in design are when someone brings a crazy idea to the table and everyone’s faces light up with creative energy as they begin to figure out how to make it work. Acknowledging the unpredicted can end up bringing some of the most beautiful, creative works. Through the risks we can also take the constructive criticism from others and apply it to future projects. Even in design, practice makes perfect.
If you’re nervous about sharing a new creative concept, it’s always good to give it a chance. Everyone has a different style so follow your gut, listen to the feedback, and grow. Graphic design is a process and the majority of the time masterpieces don’t happen overnight. Whether you learn a new style or transform a concept in the process, you never know what might happen. So, don’t give up, work hard, and keep being creative! Always remember, there is no such thing as a bad idea!
